Media ShopTalk: w/c 8th July 2013

Published on Monday, 08 July 2013 by Chris Botha in The Mediashop news

July the 1st, was the 182nd day of the year. That means that at 12 o clock on the 1st of July, we were exactly half way through the year, and we are officially headed for the end of the year. Believe it or not, but our first "Christmas campaign" briefs have come in, and we are less than a 100 days away from the 1st of October - which in my head - is the official starting gun for silly season! Wow!

So now is an excellent time to recap on what has been a crazy six months in the media industry and specifically at The MediaShop.

The media industry continues to battle its way through what remains a tough economy. Budgets are flat for the most part, and revenue remains under massive pressure for all concerned. Some industries have been hit harder than others. The print industry continues to struggle in the face of the digital avalanche. Recent Naspers results show that local print now accounts for less than 5% of the group's profit. At the same time - digital has officially passed Television as their biggest contributor to revenue. Changing times indeed. If you want to know more about this - please contact us to come and discuss the 2013 media landscape with you and your team.

From a Radio perspective we saw the launch of a few exciting new media opportunities. Power FM in Gauteng, and Smile FM in the Cape are two examples of new options available to advertisers that will add some competition to the big players in this market. How they'll bite in the marketplace? Time will tell, but they are entering a really competitive environment, so it’s sure to be tough!

And at MediaShop we've been busy, having just finished our second lecture series - called "Media under the magnifying glass". The eight lecture series attracted a great turn out from clients, and is in the process of being rolled out to our Cape Town and Durban offices. It adds massive value, we think, to your business, and best of all is an added value service from us - in other words, free! Charles and Bonita will be in contact with you about this soon. We also hosted a fantastic media forum with Brett St Clare from Google. Brett presented the Google business vision, and discussed some of the exciting initiatives coming out of Palo Alto. (I am definitely getting myself the new "Google Glass"). Thanks to everyone who attended.

We were also very honoured to once again be awarded the Finweek AdReview Large Media Agency of the Year. The award recognises business growth, innovation, contribution to the industry, and staff and CSI initiatives. To crown the evening off - Harry Herber was honoured with the Lifetime Achiever Award! We would like to thank you - our partners - for making this possible with us.

New business has also been good - and we've won two very prestigious digital pitches. Our digital department is really growing fast, and is headed for some exciting times ahead. If you have any digital or mobile needs, are looking for advice or just an update, shoot through an email and we'll be there!

So here's to the second 182. Let's make them great, make them valuable, and have some fun along the way.
