Media ShopTalk: w/c 12 & 19 July 2010 Well, the South African World Cup Soccer has come to an end and now it’s back to reality for all of us. A number of people are already commenting that their social lives are also a lot quieter and that they are missing their daily/weekly dose of soccer viewing! Below are two tables of the programme AR’s (audience ratings) achieved against a couple of target markets. The first has been ranked – from highest to lowest – against Adults LSM 5-7 and reflects SABC only. The second is against Adults LSM 8-10 with Pay TV and reflects DSTv only. The specific quarter hour ratings are available and what is evident is that most people watch the 1st half of the 20h30 matches but failed to watch to the end of the match! This could be for one of two reasons: by half time people had assumed what the end result would be OR the majority of people were still working and therefore went to bed!

The highest AR’s that were achieved are some of the highest we have seen in a very long time. The likes of Generations on SABC 1 often achieves between 25 and 35 AR’s but when looking at the DSTv results achieved, these are the highest ever.



For those of you haven’t been exposed to this kind of detail for TV – an audience rating is equivalent to 1% reach of the target market. This therefore means that for the highest SABC rating 31.1% or 4.895 million people in this target group were watching this match.



Interesting to note that against the LSM 5-7 market, the South African games are the top performing games, whilst against the LSM 8-10 DSTV viewers, the Semi final was the game that came out tops!



But now, it’s back to normal with TV schedules returning to what they were before the soccer and therefore viewing habits returning to the levels we are used to seeing. The good news though is that DSTv-i has launched! This means, thanks to Oracle, we have a much larger DSTv sample to work with which in turn means that we will be able to get better, more robust results on DSTv plans. The DSTv-i sample is around 4 000 respondents.



This research will be made available to the industry over the next couple of weeks and whilst the ratings will not be anything like the above results from the soccer - we will then be able to get much better projections on campaigns on the DSTv bouquets.
